Trauma Therapy

After a traumatic event, your body can stay on guard. You might have intrusive memories, avoid reminders, feel jumpy or numb, or blame yourself for things that weren’t in your control. Trauma therapy at Mason Family Counseling helps your brain and body relearn safety so you can feel present again. Care is available in person in Mason and via telehealth across Ohio.

Rewrite your story, on your terms.

Signs You May Need Help

How We Treat Trauma

We pace treatment to your comfort and goals. Early work uses trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to reduce reactivity and update stuck beliefs, with dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) informed grounding and distress-tolerance skills for tough moments. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) helps you reconnect with valued life areas even while symptoms are present. We include mindfulness and gentle somatic strategies to calm the nervous system and improve sleep, plus parts- and family/systems-informed work when inner conflict or family roles are involved. As stability grows, we may add supported, gradual exposure to help your brain relearn safety. With consent, we coordinate care with medical providers or prescribers.

What Sessions Look Like At Mason Family Counseling

Phase 1 emphasizes stabilization and safety—sleep, grounding, and a clear trigger plan. Phase 2 moves into processing at your pace, without forcing graphic detail. Phase 3 focuses on reconnection—returning to routines, relationships, and places with confidence. Most clients start weekly, then taper as skills hold.
